Lime tolerant but not on shallow chalk soils.

Alternate, 3 palmate leaves. Resents being transplanted. Will grow in poor, acid soils although they are lime tolerant. Do not prune into old wood.

Found in habitats ranging from lowland woodland to mountains. Grown mainly for their 4-lobed, tubular usually fragrant flowers. Followed by oblong fruits. Simple, linear to ovate entire leaves are alternate. Grown in a rock garden, shrub border or woodland. Soil slightly alkaline to acid. Mulch to keep roots cool as soil should not dry out.This is one of the most fragrant daphnes, a Chinese species which grows quite happily in shade or dappled sunlight, but prefers some shelter from cold winds. Hardy with creamy-yellow edged evergreen leaves, arranged in neat rosettes. The tubular pinky flowers are small and fragrant, arranged in clusters at the shoot tips, and appearing early in the year. (Scrophulariaceae). Genus of about 100 species of evergreen shrubs grown for dense spikes, panicles or racemes of tubular white or purple flowers and their foliage. From a variety of habitats, ranging from rocky sites and cliffs to scrub and grassland: they are found from coastal areas to mountain regions, mainly in New Zealand, but also in S. E. Australia, new Guinea and South America. Dense, opposite leaves are scale-like to lance shaped. Grow well in coastal areas and make good hedges or groundcover. They are also good as container plants. Cut back minimally in spring to tidy leggy plants. Foliage tinged purple on some. Suitable for a wide range of sites, including a mixed or shrub border or a rock garden. Neutral to alkaline soil is best.
